As you may be aware, and as communicated through our last E-Newsletter, the university administration is contemplating an 8% increase in graduate tuition fees for all incoming graduate students, and a 4% for continuing graduate students. The SGPS has opposed this move throughout. We have pointed out that this move is contrary to the University's strategic plan, and in particular to its much publicized commitment to increasing graduate enrolment. Furthermore, we have argued that in the absence of a formalized procedure that would allow graduate students to negotiate increased salaries and improved funding packages, the proposed increased tuition fees would erode the already tenuous financial security of graduate students. International students seem to be particularly vulnerable. Increasing their tuition fees by 8% seems to negate the much publicized improvements made to their funding packages, in particular to the elimination of the differential tuition fees between domestic and international students.

The proposal is to be presented to the Board of Trustees for action this weekend. The Board will meet on Friday November 30th at 7 p.m. and Saturday December 1st at 9 a.m. in Policy Studies 202.
